Moving tips for senior citizens and empty nesters
Downsizing can feel like a gigantic task, especially if you’ve lived in the same home for many years. We’ve rounded up some tips to make it more manageable, so you can pack and move with less stress.
1) Figure out your space limitations
If possible, get a floor plan of your new home so you know how much furniture will fit and where each item will go.
Think about your storage space, too, and consider getting a storage unit if needed. Knowing your space limitations will make it easier to decide what to keep, donate, or sell.
2) Start sorting early. It will take longer than you think!
Focus on one area of the house at a time. Put things in a “definitely keep” pile, a “maybe keep” pile, and a “donate / sell” pile.
Consider having a yard sale if the weather is nice, or sell valuable items on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace.
What should you do with items that have special memories attached? Find out in this blog post, “How to sort through a lifetime of memories when you’re preparing to move.”
3) Pack boxes with care
To protect your items, invest in sturdy moving boxes. Put heavier items on the bottom and lighter items on top. Use enough bubble wrap or packing paper that things don’t shift around.
Keep similar items together, if possible. (I.e., kitchen items or bathroom supplies.) Remember to write a brief description of what is inside each box, and label delicate items as FRAGILE.
4) Special tips for furniture and electronics
Take step-by-step pictures as you disassemble furniture. Put the screws and hardware in a plastic bag, and attach it to the item with blue painters tape. This will make reassembly a breeze!
Take a photo of the back of electronics, too, so you know where the cords go. Use a zip tie to keep cords from getting tangled.
